Editor's Notes
This was Salix's 500th recorded game in the database (and we've almost certainly played many more than that!). It's a fantastic milestone and a great opportunity to thank Tony, our founder, for starting this wonderful club all those years ago.
The game also featured seven debutants. First and foremost, thank you for making yourselves available — without you, there would not have been a game. We hope this is the first of many appearances in Salix colours and look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Match Report
Salix awoke on Sunday morning in the unusual position of having the chance to record three consecutive victories. A winning streak of that length has been a rare sight in recent years. The first hurdle had already been cleared, with CK doing an excellent job recruiting four additional players to ensure the fixture could go ahead.
The second challenge was overcoming the Gents, who arrived at Barnes with a mix of familiar faces and some new additions. It was great to see the likes of Sanjay, Hemin, Bobby, Nilesh and Nishu, alongside several newer players. As always, former Gents player Andy was on hand to score, a contribution that is much appreciated by both sides. We were also joined by Tim, Jules, Poppy, Steve-O and Herr Direktor Fletch, who came along to witness Salix's attempt at a three-peat.
After ensuring all of our new recruits found the correct ground, the match eventually got underway at 2pm, with Salix electing to bowl after CK won the toss.
Rich and Liam opened the bowling. Liam, a friend of Arsey's and a regular with the DJs, quickly settled into an excellent line and length that troubled the Gents batters throughout his spell. Rich also found his rhythm after a few early deliveries and was rewarded when one of the openers miscued a shot to midwicket, where Achi held a comfortable catch on debut.
Liam came close to a wicket when Nilesh offered a difficult return catch, but despite an athletic dive to his left, the chance would not quite stick.
Rich soon added a second breakthrough, surprising the opener with a straight delivery that beat the bat and rattled the stumps.
Salix bowled well as a unit and took regular wickets throughout the innings. Liam and CK were both unfortunate not to feature in the wicket column after bowling tidily and creating opportunities. The fielding side had to work hard in warm conditions, while Nilesh made the most of his chances to compile an excellent unbeaten 99, guiding the Gents to 180 for 7 from their 35 overs. Debutants Sandeep, C Reddy and L Reddy all contributed well with the ball and picked up wickets.
Chasing 181, Salix began steadily. Achi departed after making a positive start in his first game for nearly three years. Vijay then helped settle the innings, while Arsey increased the tempo with a typically aggressive and entertaining 24.
After Arsey's dismissal, CK joined Vijay and the pair built an important partnership that kept Salix firmly in the chase. Vijay batted superbly to reach his maiden half-century for the club before retiring, allowing others the opportunity to bat. At 125 for 3 after 25 overs, Salix were well placed, requiring 56 from the final 10 overs.
The Gents responded well, however, and a cluster of wickets left the game finely balanced at 152 for 7 after 30 overs. With 29 required from the final five overs, the result remained very much in the balance.
Kishore Reddy, who had picked up an injury while fielding earlier in the day, came to the crease alongside CK and helped keep Salix in contention. CK continued to anchor the chase beautifully and looked set for a deserved half-century, only for A Choudhry to strike with his first delivery after coming into the attack, dismissing him for an excellent 49.
Rich, meanwhile, had been assuring teammates that his batting was stronger than his bowling, giving Salix further hope as the target edged closer.
Rich and Kishore guided Salix into the penultimate over before Kishore departed for a valuable 16. At 171 for 9 after 34 overs, Salix needed 10 runs from the final over, with the Gents requiring just one wicket.
After surviving the final ball of A Choudhry's over, the strike returned to Rich to face Gents stalwart Sanjay Patel.
What followed was a thrilling finish. Two runs came from each of the first three deliveries, reducing the target to four runs from the final three balls. With both batters pushing hard between the wickets, the game remained on a knife-edge.
Sanjay maintained a disciplined line and length, and when a run was attempted from the fourth ball, the Gents fielders combined smartly to complete a run-out. The Gents celebrated, having secured victory by four runs in a closely fought contest.
Although the result did not go our way, it was another enjoyable afternoon played in excellent spirit against a team we always enjoy facing. Congratulations to the Gents on their victory, and we look forward to the return fixture later in the season.
Special congratulations go to our debutants—Liam, Achi, Vijay, L Reddy, K Reddy and Sandeep—who all made valuable contributions and, most importantly, helped ensure the game could take place.
As is often the case, many Salix players headed to the Red Lion afterwards to reflect on an entertaining match over a pint and a Sunday roast. While the result was not quite what we had hoped for, it was another enjoyable day of cricket and a reminder of how fine the margins can be in this game.
